Adopt a Rescued Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
The adoption fee for a particular dog is always personally communicated to the potential adopters by one of NWR’s Rescue Specialists. Adoption fees – which are intentionally set as low as possible and generally range from $300 to $600 depending on the age of the dog – do not cover all of NWR’s costs to provide rescue intervention services but they play an important part in financially supporting our mission.

Research
To learn more about Wheaten Terriers as a breed, we recommend reading the information available on the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America (SCWTCA) website and on our FAQ page to learn more about whether a rescued Wheaten Terrier might be the right kind of dog for you.
SCWTCA is also a great source for a wealth of vetted information you will find helpful after you adopt a Wheaten, or if you already own one.
The Wheaten Health page on their site, scwtca.org/health, offers dozens of articles and links to support Wheaten owners’ goals to help their dogs live long and healthy lives. You’ll find valuable information about annual testing protocols (scwtca.org/health/health-testing/annual-testing), core vaccine recommendations (scwtca.org/leptospirosis-vaccine-update-akc), diet and nutrition myths (scwtca.org/health/feeding), as well as information that can help you and your veterinarian be aware of the diseases to which Wheatens, as a breed, are more susceptible.

While there is no such thing as a “one size fits all” training plan – and the most effective training is tailored to the individual dog’s history, personality and owners – the information available there about teaching basic commands may help get you started. Complete and Submit our National Wheaten Rescue Adoption Application
Room in your home and heart for a rescued Wheaten? Adoption applications from residents of all 48 contiguous states are accepted for consideration if a Wheaten in reasonable proximity of the applicant becomes available for rehoming. (Because of logistics and other considerations, National Wheaten Rescue is not able to place dogs in Hawaii, Alaska, or outside of the United States.) Your NWR Adoption Application is completed online and automatically entered in our system when you hit SUBMIT at the bottom of the form. Please note that, because paper applications don’t allow us to search for the right new home in a timely manner, we are not able to consider adoption applications submitted through regular mail or by email.
Because people interested in adopting a rescued Wheaten may also be considering acquiring a dog from a Wheaten breeder, or may be submitting applications to other rescue groups, NWR Adoption Applications are only considered active for 12 months. To keep an application current in our system, please update your household information by completing a new application if you are still interested in adopting a rescued Wheaten after that period of time.
Confirmation
After you submit an Adoption Application using NWR’s online form, you will receive an auto-reply email confirming National Wheaten Rescue has received it.
Be Patient
National Wheaten Rescue’s primary consideration when placing a dog in a new home is what will be the best fit for the dog, and therefore most likely to be a successful match for the new owners too. Many factors, including the dog’s location and how far the Wheaten will need to travel to get to a new home, its health history, sex, compatibility with other dogs, and behavior challenges (if any) are always considered and matched with applicants’ preferences whenever possible. Because finding the right fit for the dog can take time, finding the right dog for you can take time too!
Accepting A Wheaten into your Home
When an applicant is offered a Wheaten rescued by NWR, an NWR Adoption Agreement specific to that individual dog is completed by one of our Rescue Specialists and sent to the Adopters, along with the NWR Waiver of Liability. Those forms are signed by the Adopters, who will also pay the adoption fee for that dog, so the adoption agreement can be approved by NWR prior to placement of the dog into the new home. These forms are available on the FORMS page for review in advance of a dog being offered. Adoption fees are based on the age and/or health of the Wheaten being adopted and are shown in the answer to the fees question on our FAQ page.

On our CONTACT US page, you’ll find contact information for the SCWTCA chapters who may also have rescued Wheatens available for adoption. If one of those clubs is located near you, it may increase your chances of receiving a rescued purebred Wheaten to also submit an Adoption Application to them.
