Surrendering a Wheaten

If you are considering surrendering your Wheaten Terrier, start by contacting us at 707-WHEATEN (707-943-2836) or at rescue@nationalwheatenrescueinc.org. National Wheaten Rescue offers rescue interventions in all 48 contiguous states. (Because of logistics and other considerations, we are not able to rehome dogs in Hawaii, Alaska, or outside the United States.)

Our Rescue Specialists are sometimes able to offer advice or suggest resources that enable owners to keep their dogs. We understand, though, that life sometimes deals events that make it impossible to provide the kind of home your Wheaten deserves. Our team promptly responds to owners who are making the incredibly difficult decision to surrender their dog. In whatever way we can help, we are here for you and your Wheaten.

If you plan to surrender your Wheaten, please DO NOT offer your dog on any type of buying site or in any online post as that does not assure the best re-homing possible for your Wheaten and can often place dogs in dangerous if not life-threatening situations. National Wheaten Rescue’s mission is to find the safest, most loving homes possible for Wheatens in need of re-homing.

Before your surrender your Wheaten

If you purchased your Wheaten Terrier from a breeder, review your purchase contract before surrendering your Wheaten to NWR or anyone else as you may be required to return your dog to your breeder. Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America and National Wheaten Rescue both recognize and honor a reputable breeder’s requirement – and commitment – to remain responsible for dogs they breed for the life of the dog as a best practice that is in the Wheaten’s best interest.

How NWR’s surrender process works

The first step is to initiate contact with one of our Rescue Specialists by calling 707-WHEATEN (707-943-2836) or emailing rescue@nationalwheatenrescueinc.com. NWR responds promptly and proactively to surrender inquiries to understand the needs and urgency of each situation.

After you and NWR’s Rescue Specialist speak and determine that NWR will be able to take the next steps to rescue and rehome your Wheaten, you will be asked to complete a Dog Profile Questionnaire (which will be emailed to you) and the NWR Waiver of Liability, which is available for review on our FORMS page.
Learning about your Wheaten may, but does not always, include an in-home evaluation to assure that NWR understands as much as possible about the dog’s needs. If one is needed as part of the evaluation process, the NWR Rescue Specialist will confirm your availability for scheduling that and make the necessary arrangements for the visit.
After receiving everything requested, NWR’s rescue team will review the information and, if the determination is made to begin the rescue process, your Rescue Specialist will ask you to complete an Ownership Transfer Agreement.
Most forms used during a rescue intervention are available on our FORMS page for easy access after you are asked to complete them, or to review now. Your Rescue Specialist will advise where to email completed forms.
If you don’t already have them, request complete health records from your veterinarian, as NWR will ask for them as part of the surrender process.
If your Wheaten is currently on medication for a health condition, be prepared to make the surrender as safe and healthy as possible for your dog by turning over any remaining medicines you might have along with your dog.

Dogs that Bite

National Wheaten Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit organization that cannot accept the potential liability involved in fostering or rehoming a Wheaten that has a known history of biting a human. If an owner has a Wheaten that has bitten a person, they should immediately take the dog to their veterinarian and have the vet perform a complete physical examination, including blood and urine work. In these situations, the vet will be the best resource for suggesting the next course of action.
